System Designer

UK Remote or West Midlands-based / Full-Time Contractor

Role:

We are seeking a creative System Designer to design core gameplay and systems for our co-development projects. You will play a key role in developing gameplay mechanics, systems, and overall player experiences. Leveraging your expertise, you will collaborate with cross-functional teams and ensure that our games deliver immersive, engaging, and memorable experiences.  

Responsibilities:

  • Own the design of innovative gameplay mechanics, systems, and features that align with the game’s creative vision and narrative.  
  • Design and balance gameplay systems, progression loops, economies, and other core mechanics to ensure a satisfying and rewarding player experience.  
  • Where appropriate, prototype features in engine to illustrate the vision for a feature or system. 
  • Implement strategies to optimize player engagement, retention, and overall satisfaction through effective gameplay design and mechanics.  
  • Continuously analyse and adjust game parameters, difficulty curves, and progression to achieve optimal player satisfaction and gameplay balance.  
  • Collaborate effectively with team members and iterate on game design elements based on internal and external feedback to achieve the desired gameplay objectives.  

Essential:

  • 3+ years of experience as a Game Designer in the video game industry, with a proven track record of contributing to successful game projects.  
  • “In Engine” Experience: Experience of prototyping, tuning and balancing game features and content in Unreal Engine or similar proprietary engine. 
  • Analytical and Critical Thinking: Strong analytical and critical thinking skills to assess and improve gameplay elements, systems, and player experiences.  
  • Collaborative Mindset: Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to collaborate seamlessly within cross-disciplinary teams and provide effective guidance.  
  • Passion for Gaming: A deep passion for video games and a keen understanding of player behaviour and engagement mechanics 

Desirable:

  • Experience delivering feature sets within a co-development studio.  
  • Experience designing and balancing combat, 3C’s or AI within a released title.  
  • Strong Unreal Blueprinting skills where you can prototype mechanics and features from scratch 
  • Experience of working within Unreal on online features 
  • Open-world encounter, mission and feature design 
  • Experience with post-launch, live service or DLC development
