Role ID: FLX-R109
Role:
The Advanced Gameplay Engineer designs and delivers gameplay features and supporting systems across internal projects and co-development partnerships. The role combines strong programming skills with experience in AI, animation integration and software design to create maintainable systems that support engaging player experiences.
The role will initially support an open-world fantasy survival-crafting title, contributing to gameplay development, AI behaviour and animation-driven functionality. Responsibilities and project assignments will evolve as existing projects develop and new projects are commissioned.
Working closely with Design, Engineering, Animation, QA and Production, you will take ownership of assigned features from technical planning and prototyping through to implementation, testing and polish. You will draw on experience with C++, Unreal Engine 5, Blueprints, Unity and C# to evaluate approaches and deliver solutions within the project’s architecture.
The role also contributes to mentoring and technical knowledge sharing, helping colleagues strengthen their understanding of engine workflows and gameplay development. Strong planning skills and clear communication will support the coordination of complex work and its dependencies.
Responsibilities:
- Own the technical design and delivery of assigned gameplay features from initial requirements through to final implementation and polish.
- Collaborate with designers to translate gameplay goals into clear technical plans and achievable development tasks.
- Develop gameplay systems using C++ and Unreal Engine Blueprints, maintaining effective boundaries between native code and designer-facing functionality.
- Implement and refine AI behaviours and supporting systems in collaboration with Design and other engineers.
- Integrate animation with gameplay logic, working with animators to ensure character behaviour and visual feedback remain consistent.
- Apply appropriate software design patterns to create maintainable, reusable systems that support iteration.
- Prototype mechanics and technical approaches, using testing and feedback to guide further development.
- Investigate and resolve defects across gameplay, AI and animation systems, working with QA to verify fixes.
- Plan and coordinate assigned technical work, identifying dependencies, estimating tasks and communicating delivery risks.
- Mentor engineers and support colleagues through code reviews, practical guidance and structured knowledge sharing.
- Create clear technical documentation and explain implementation approaches to both technical and non-technical colleagues.
- Contribute to improvements in engineering practices and Unreal Engine workflows.
Essential:
- 8 years’ relevant experience in game engineering, including substantial work on gameplay and supporting systems.
- Proven ability to operate as an Advanced Gameplay Engineer, Senior Gameplay Engineer or equivalent, independently owning complex features.
- Strong programming skills in C++, with practical experience in C#.
- Strong experience with Unreal Engine 5 and Blueprints, including implementing and debugging gameplay functionality.
- Practical experience with Unity and custom game engines.
- Experience implementing AI systems and animation-related gameplay functionality.
- Strong understanding of software design patterns and their practical application to game systems.
- Ability to take features from technical investigation through to implementation, testing and refinement.
- Strong technical planning and project management skills, including managing dependencies and coordinating delivery.
- Experience mentoring colleagues and communicating technical concepts clearly.
- Strong debugging, collaboration and problem-solving skills.
Desirable:
- Experience developing gameplay for open-world, fantasy, survival or crafting games.
- Experience implementing gameplay systems for cooperative multiplayer projects.
- Experience delivering structured Unreal Engine training or technical workshops.
- A recognised Unreal Engine instructor qualification or equivalent evidence of technical teaching experience.
- Experience creating reusable gameplay components and designer-facing tools.
- Experience profiling and optimising gameplay, AI or animation systems.
- Experience working within co-development partnerships and adapting to established architectures and workflows.
- Previous shipped title(s) in a gameplay, AI or systems engineering capacity.
