Technical Director

UK Remote or West Midlands-based / Full-Time Contractor

Role:

As Technical Director, you will define and lead the technical strategy, architecture, and capability of the studio’s development work. You will combine strategic leadership with hands-on technical involvement, guiding complex technical decisions, supporting high-quality delivery, and ensuring teams have the tools, systems, and technical foundations needed to build scalable, performant, and innovative games.

Responsibilities:

  1. Technical Strategy and Direction:
    • Define and evolve the technical vision, strategy, standards, and long-term capability required to support current and future projects.
    • Translate business, stakeholder, and product needs into clear technical approaches, identifying opportunities, risks, investment needs, and delivery trade-offs.
  2. Architecture and Technical Excellence:
    • Guide the design of scalable technical architecture across tools, automation, rendering, audio, integrations, telemetry, and core game systems.
    • Lead critical technical reviews and problem solving, ensuring solutions are robust, maintainable, secure, and appropriate for the project’s needs.
  3. Technology, Tools, and Innovation:
    • Drive the development and adoption of effective tools, technical workflows, automation, and research-and-development initiatives that improve development efficiency and product quality.
    • Evaluate technology choices, technical stacks, and external integrations, ensuring they support reliable delivery across platforms and project types.
  4. Technical Leadership and Collaboration:
    • Provide technical leadership and mentorship across engineering teams, supporting technical growth, sound decision-making, and consistent engineering practices.
    • Partner with production, creative leadership, business development, and stakeholders to support technical planning, proposals, and successful project delivery.

Essential:

  • Strong technical leadership experience across game development, architecture, and studio-level technical strategy.
  • Deep understanding of software architecture, technical stacks, systems development, and cross-platform delivery.
  • Experience with tools development, automation, research and development, profiling, optimisation, and test-driven development.
  • Broad technical knowledge across rendering, audio, integrations, telemetry, porting, and core game technology.
  • Experience contributing technical expertise to proposals, project planning, and stakeholder-facing discussions.
  • Excellent communication, mentoring, strategic thinking, and complex problem-solving skills.
