Role ID: FLX-R105
Role:
The Gameplay Engineer supports the development and maintenance of gameplay features, game systems and supporting technology across internal projects and co-development partnerships. The role combines practical programming skills with an investigative approach to technical challenges, including procedural content and world systems.
The role will initially support an open-world fantasy survival-crafting title, contributing to gameplay functionality, character movement, supporting systems and bug fixing. Responsibilities and project assignments will evolve as existing projects develop and new projects are commissioned.
Working closely with Engineering, Design, QA and Production, you will implement scoped features, research technical approaches and resolve defects within existing systems. You will draw on experience with Unreal Engine 5, Unity and custom engines to understand project requirements and contribute solutions within the team’s established architecture.
The role requires clear communication, methodical problem-solving and the ability to deliver agreed tasks while seeking technical guidance where appropriate.
Responsibilities:
- Implement and maintain assigned gameplay features and supporting game systems in line with agreed designs and coding standards.
- Contribute to character movement functionality, working with designers and other engineers to refine behaviour through testing and feedback.
- Support procedural world and content systems, including implementing scoped functionality and investigating generation issues.
- Research technical approaches, document findings and build focused prototypes to help the team evaluate potential solutions.
- Investigate, reproduce and resolve defects across gameplay, systems and supporting engine functionality.
- Work within existing core technology to implement agreed changes and maintain compatibility with dependent systems.
- Collaborate with Design to clarify intended behaviour and translate requirements into achievable engineering tasks.
- Work with QA to verify fixes and check for regressions.
- Write maintainable code, participate in code reviews and document relevant functionality.
- Communicate progress, dependencies and technical blockers, escalating complex issues to senior engineers when needed.
Essential:
- 4 years’ relevant experience in software engineering, including work on game systems, gameplay or supporting technology.
- Practical programming skills in C++ and C#, with an understanding of debugging and maintainable code.
- Experience working with Unreal Engine 5, Unity and custom game engines.
- Practical understanding of gameplay implementation, including straightforward character movement or related functionality.
- Experience contributing to game systems and investigating interactions between code, content and engine behaviour.
- Familiarity with procedural world or content generation techniques and their use in game development.
- Ability to research technical problems, compare potential approaches and communicate findings clearly.
- Strong bug investigation skills, with a methodical approach to reproducing issues and identifying their causes.
- Ability to work within an established architecture, respond constructively to code review and deliver well-defined tasks.
- Clear communication and collaboration skills, including recognising when additional guidance is needed.
Desirable:
- Experience developing features for open-world, survival or crafting games.
- Experience supporting procedural generation tools, validation or debugging workflows.
- Familiarity with gameplay development for cooperative multiplayer projects.
- Experience using Unreal Engine Blueprints alongside native code.
- Experience profiling game systems or investigating performance issues.
- Experience contributing to core technology improvements under the guidance of senior engineers.
- Experience working within co-development teams and adapting to shared technical standards.
- Previous shipped title(s) in a gameplay, systems or engineering support capacity.
