Role:
The Experienced Gameplay Engineer develops and maintains gameplay features, tools and supporting systems across internal projects and co-development partnerships. The role combines practical engineering skills with rapid prototyping experience to explore design ideas and turn agreed approaches into reliable game functionality.
The role will initially support an open-world fantasy survival-crafting title, contributing to gameplay, AI, UI and general game systems. Responsibilities and project assignments will evolve as existing projects develop and new projects are commissioned.
Working closely with Engineering, Design, QA and Production, you will take responsibility for well-defined features from investigation and prototyping through to implementation, testing and refinement. You will draw on experience with Unreal Engine 5 and custom engines to work within established architectures, resolve defects and support efficient development workflows.
The role requires clear communication, dependable delivery and a practical approach to problem-solving. You will contribute knowledge and feedback to colleagues while seeking specialist guidance where work extends beyond your area of ownership.
Responsibilities:
- Implement and maintain assigned gameplay features and supporting systems in line with agreed designs and technical standards.
- Build rapid prototypes to explore mechanics, test assumptions and help designers evaluate potential approaches.
- Develop successful prototypes into maintainable functionality, addressing integration and testing requirements.
- Implement and refine AI behaviour in collaboration with designers and other engineers.
- Develop UI functionality and connect interface elements to underlying game systems and data.
- Create and maintain tools that support gameplay development and reduce repetitive work.
- Investigate, reproduce and resolve defects across gameplay, AI, UI and general systems.
- Work with QA to verify fixes, check for regressions and address relevant console technical requirements.
- Collaborate with other engineers to integrate features within existing Unreal Engine 5 or custom engine workflows.
- Participate in code reviews and document relevant functionality, dependencies and implementation decisions.
- Share practical knowledge and support less experienced colleagues with familiar systems and tasks.
- Communicate estimates, progress and technical blockers to leads and Production.
Essential:
- 8 years’ relevant experience in game engineering, including gameplay and supporting systems development.
- Proven ability to deliver well-defined features with appropriate autonomy and technical guidance.
- Practical programming skills in C++ and C#, with an understanding of maintainable code and debugging.
- Experience working with Unreal Engine 5 and custom game engines.
- Strong rapid prototyping skills, with the ability to explore ideas and respond to design feedback.
- Experience implementing gameplay functionality and AI systems.
- Experience developing UI functionality and integrating it with game systems.
- Practical experience creating or maintaining development tools.
- Strong bug investigation skills, including isolating causes and validating fixes.
- Awareness of console technical requirements and their implications for implementation and testing.
- Clear communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to organise assigned work and identify dependencies.
Desirable:
- Experience developing gameplay for open-world, fantasy, survival or crafting games.
- Experience supporting cooperative multiplayer gameplay.
- Experience using Unreal Engine Blueprints alongside native code.
- Experience creating reusable gameplay components or designer-facing tools.
- Experience profiling gameplay systems and implementing targeted performance improvements.
- Experience resolving issues identified during console compliance testing.
- Experience mentoring or providing practical support to less experienced engineers.
- Experience working within co-development partnerships and adapting to shared technical standards.
- Previous shipped title(s) in a gameplay, tools or systems engineering capacity.
