Intermediate Build Engineer

UK Remote or West Midlands-based / Full-Time Contractor

Role:

As an Intermediate Build Engineer, you will support the development, maintenance, and optimisation of game build systems and technical workflows. You will work closely with engineering, QA, and production colleagues to ensure builds are reliable, accessible, and suitable for efficient testing and development, while also contributing to gameplay systems, prototyping, and technical problem solving.

Responsibilities:

  1. Build Systems and Delivery:
    • Develop, maintain, and improve build processes to support reliable, repeatable game builds for internal development and testing.
    • Investigate build-related issues and work with engineering and QA teams to minimise disruption and maintain development momentum.
  2. Technical Systems Development:
    • Contribute to game systems and technical features, applying clean, maintainable engineering practices.
    • Support the integration and upkeep of systems across relevant engine and custom-engine development environments where required.
  3. Prototyping and Gameplay Support:
    • Build rapid technical prototypes to help validate gameplay ideas, systems, and implementation approaches.
    • Collaborate with design and engineering colleagues to turn prototypes into robust, production-ready features.
  4. Collaboration and Quality:
    • Work closely with QA, production, and development teams to support testing, issue resolution, and release readiness.
    • Document relevant processes and share technical knowledge to improve team efficiency and consistency.

Essential:

  • Experience supporting build systems, technical workflows, or game-development pipelines.
  • Strong practical knowledge of game-engine and custom-engine development environments.
  • Experience developing gameplay systems and technical prototypes.
  • Understanding of software-development best practices, debugging, and issue investigation.
  • Strong problem-solving skills, with the ability to work independently while collaborating effectively with a wider team.
  • Clear communication skills and a proactive approach to improving development processes.
