The role combines practical programming skills with experience in AI, multiplayer replication and console development to deliver reliable functionality that supports the player experience.
The role will initially support an open-world fantasy survival-crafting title, contributing to gameplay systems, AI functionality and multiplayer features. Responsibilities and project assignments will evolve as existing projects develop and new projects are commissioned.
Working closely with Engineering, Design, QA and Production, you will take responsibility for well-defined features from implementation through to testing and refinement. You will draw on experience with Unreal Engine 5, Unity, custom engines and console platforms to investigate issues and deliver solutions within the project’s established architecture.
The role requires dependable technical delivery, clear communication and a methodical approach to problem-solving. You will also support colleagues through practical knowledge sharing and seek specialist guidance where work extends beyond your area of ownership.
Responsibilities:
- Implement and maintain assigned gameplay features and game systems in line with agreed designs and technical standards.
- Collaborate with designers to clarify intended behaviour and translate requirements into achievable engineering tasks.
- Develop and refine AI functionality, investigating behaviour through testing and feedback.
- Implement and debug multiplayer replication for assigned features, helping maintain consistent behaviour across connected players.
- Support integrations with online services, including PlayFab, within the project’s established systems.
- Contribute to console development and porting tasks, adapting functionality to platform requirements.
- Profile assigned systems and implement targeted improvements to performance and resource usage.
- Investigate, reproduce and resolve defects across gameplay, networking and supporting technology.
- Work with QA to verify fixes, check for regressions and address relevant console technical requirements.
- Participate in code reviews and maintain clear documentation for assigned functionality.
- Share practical knowledge with colleagues and support less experienced engineers on familiar tasks.
- Communicate progress, estimates, dependencies and technical blockers to leads and Production.
Essential:
- 5 years’ relevant experience in game engineering, including gameplay and supporting systems development.
- Proven ability to deliver well-defined gameplay features with appropriate autonomy and technical guidance.
- Practical programming skills in C++ and C#, with an understanding of maintainable software design and debugging.
- Experience working with Unreal Engine 5, Unity and custom game engines.
- Experience implementing gameplay systems and AI functionality.
- Practical understanding of multiplayer replication, including investigating synchronisation and network-related defects.
- Experience developing for consoles or contributing to porting work.
- Familiarity with PlayFab and its integration into game systems.
- Experience profiling functionality and implementing targeted optimisation.
- Awareness of console technical requirements and their implications for implementation and testing.
- Strong problem-solving, communication and collaboration skills.
Desirable:
- Experience developing gameplay for cooperative multiplayer, open-world or survival-crafting games.
- Experience using Unreal Engine Blueprints alongside native code.
- Experience investigating gameplay behaviour under latency or connectivity changes.
- Experience supporting console certification testing and resolving platform-specific defects.
- Experience creating reusable components or tools that improve gameplay development workflows.
- Experience mentoring or providing practical support to less experienced engineers.
- Experience working within co-development partnerships and adapting to shared technical standards.
- Previous shipped title(s) in a gameplay, systems or console engineering capacity.
