
Senior Lead Gameplay Engineer
UK Remote or West Midlands-based / Full-Time Contractor

Role:
As a Senior Lead Gameplay Engineer, you will lead the hands-on development of high-quality gameplay systems while supporting the engineering team’s technical delivery. You will work directly on complex gameplay and technical challenges, set clear implementation standards, and collaborate closely with design, art, QA, and production to deliver stable, performant, and engaging player experiences.
Responsibilities:
- Gameplay Engineering and Technical Delivery:
- Design, implement, and maintain robust gameplay systems, player-facing features, and supporting technical functionality.
- Personally investigate and resolve complex gameplay, integration, and performance issues, ensuring solutions are reliable and maintainable.
- Technical Leadership and Team Support:
- Provide day-to-day technical guidance to gameplay engineers, supporting task planning, problem solving, code quality, and delivery confidence.
- Conduct code reviews, share engineering knowledge, and help establish practical standards for maintainable gameplay development.
- Systems, Platform, and Performance:
- Contribute to technical design and systems architecture, ensuring gameplay features integrate effectively with wider game and engine systems.
- Support porting, platform compliance, and Technical Requirement Checklist work, identifying risks early and helping ensure a consistent experience across supported platforms.
- Profile and optimise gameplay and supporting systems to meet performance, stability, and quality expectations.
- Cross-Discipline Collaboration:
- Partner with design, art, QA, and production to translate requirements into practical implementation plans and clear technical decisions.
- Communicate progress, risks, dependencies, and trade-offs clearly, helping the team make informed delivery decisions.
Essential:
- Strong hands-on experience developing gameplay systems and player-facing features within a game-development environment.
- Experience providing technical leadership, mentoring engineers, and improving engineering quality through code reviews and practical guidance.
- Strong knowledge of technical design, systems architecture, debugging, optimisation, and performance profiling.
- Experience with relevant game-engine, custom-engine, and cross-platform development.
- Understanding of porting, platform requirements, and Technical Requirement Checklist compliance.
- Excellent problem-solving, communication, and cross-discipline collaboration skills.
