
Senior Principal Gameplay Engineer
UK Remote or West Midlands-based / Full-Time Contractor

Role:
As a Senior Principal Gameplay Engineer, you will be a highly hands-on technical expert responsible for designing, developing, and improving complex gameplay and player-facing systems. You will personally solve difficult technical problems across gameplay, networking, UI/UX, tools, security, and core technology, while helping establish strong engineering practices and supporting the wider team with technical guidance.
Responsibilities:
- Hands-On Gameplay and Systems Development:
- Design, implement, and maintain complex gameplay systems that are responsive, scalable, secure, and maintainable.
- Build and improve player-facing functionality, including gameplay interactions, UI/UX systems, Blueprint-driven features, and supporting technical frameworks.
- Multiplayer, Security, and Core Technology:
- Develop and optimise multiplayer systems, including replication and synchronisation, to support reliable online player experiences.
- Contribute to anti-cheat and security-focused technical solutions, identifying risks and implementing robust mitigations where required.
- Technical Quality and Architecture:
- Apply test-driven development, strong systems design, and maintainable architecture to complex technical work.
- Investigate, debug, and resolve critical issues, balancing feature quality, performance, scalability, and long-term maintainability.
- Technical Leadership and Team Contribution:
- Lead by example through direct implementation, prototyping, code reviews, and practical technical problem solving.
- Provide technical guidance to engineers and collaborate with design, art, QA, and production to communicate risks, dependencies, and delivery options clearly.
Essential:
- Strong hands-on experience developing complex gameplay and player-facing systems in a game-development environment.
- Expertise in multiplayer replication, networked gameplay, Blueprint systems, and gameplay architecture.
- Experience developing UI/UX systems, tools, technical frameworks, and secure online features.
- Strong understanding of test-driven development, systems design, debugging, performance optimisation, and maintainable software architecture.
- Familiarity with relevant game-engine, custom-engine, and core-technology integration.
- Excellent technical problem-solving, communication, mentoring, and cross-discipline collaboration skills.
