Senior Principal Network Engineer

UK Remote or West Midlands-based / Full-Time Contractor

Role:

As a Senior Principal Network Engineer, you will be a hands-on technical expert responsible for designing, developing, and optimising the networking architecture and online systems that support reliable multiplayer game experiences. You will personally solve complex technical challenges across connectivity, replication, performance, and platform integration, while helping guide technical decisions and engineering standards across the project.

Responsibilities:

  1. Network Systems Development:
    • Design, implement, and maintain scalable network systems that support responsive, stable, and secure multiplayer gameplay.
    • Diagnose and resolve complex issues relating to connectivity, synchronisation, replication, latency, and online player experiences.
  2. Technical Architecture and Strategy:
    • Define and evolve networking architecture, ensuring systems are robust, maintainable, and appropriate for current and future development needs.
    • Provide practical technical input into system design, technical planning, and the evaluation of tools, technologies, and implementation approaches.
  3. Performance and Platform Optimisation:
    • Profile and optimise network performance, gameplay systems, memory use, and runtime behaviour across supported platforms.
    • Support porting and platform integration work, identifying technical risks early and ensuring solutions meet required performance and quality standards.
  4. Hands-On Technical Leadership:
    • Lead by example through direct development work, debugging, prototyping, and implementation of critical technical solutions.
    • Support code reviews, mentor engineers, and share expertise in networked systems, optimisation, architecture, and test-driven development.

Essential:

  • Strong hands-on experience developing multiplayer networking and online game systems.
  • Deep understanding of replication, synchronisation, latency, connectivity, and multiplayer performance optimisation.
  • Experience defining technical architecture and developing scalable, maintainable game systems.
  • Strong knowledge of profiling, optimisation, tools development, porting, console development, and test-driven development.
  • Ability to investigate and resolve complex technical issues across gameplay, online systems, and platform-specific environments.
  • Excellent communication, mentoring, and technical decision-making skills.
